April, 2009:

Manchester Phoenix To Join EPL

The Story and Reaction from Ben Knight of the Manchester Phoenix Official Podcast

Following a week of speculation, tonight Phoenix owner Neil Morris confirmed that the Manchester side would withdraw from the Elite League and join the English Premier League.

In a meeting with fans at the Britannia Hotel in Portland Street, Morris explained that financial restructuring is required to ensure the stability of the team and to sustain the franchise in whichever form it takes.

Paramount to the long-term future of ice hockey in Manchester is an achievable budget, prepared and detailed for ultimate stand-alone sustainability without reliance upon one individual. We have some fantastic sponsors, we have an incredible hard core of supporters and we need to grow them both as we look to the future.

We all believe that the English Premier League offers not only a great challenge for Tony Hand and his team on the ice, but also the best opportunity to ensure the long-term future for the club and the sport in Manchester.

It was also indicated to fans that a number of British imports including former Coventry back-up Steven Fone had already been signed up by coach Tony Hand. Fone has already turned out for the Phoenix, most notably back stopping them to a famous win over the Belfast Giants two seasons ago in Altringham.

Morris promised that the Phoenix would sign top level imports in order to successfully compete in at the highest level in the EPL.

Reaction has already come from the Elite League at the Phoenix withdrawl. A statement on the official website from Elite League Chairman Eamonn Convery expressed the leagues feelings at losing Manchester.

Of course, it is extremely disappointing that Neil Morris and his team of people in Manchester have chosen to withdraw and we wish them every success in the English Premier League

Convery also indicated that the league would continue with 8 teams, despite on going rumours of various teams wishing to join the EIHL.

The Elite League will now operate with eight clubs and with many of them already announcing exciting player signings, the prospects for another thrilling season of Elite League ice hockey are enthralling.

There is interest in how this will be received by other clubs, especially those with whom Manchester fought for change in the EIHL.

Further comment is available around the league.

Uncertain Future for Manchester in Elite League

There has been speculation of late regarding the future of the Manchester Phoenix. Prior to the Playoff Finals weekend an official website report stated the Phoenix were;

” preparing to stand their corner and if necessary, battle all the way with six of the Elite League clubs who appear ready and prepared to cast adrift those clubs they see as the poor relations of the league”.

The robust support of the Manchester fans was also evident at the Finals weekend, they along with the Newcastle fans being some of the most vocal in the cries of “Six Team League You’re Having a Laugh”.

However it seems that following the league discussions of Monday 6th April, in which the 9 remaining teams gained apparent “agreement” on the future of the EIHL, Phoenix General Manager, Andy Costigan stated through ManchesterPhoenix.co.uk that;

“We’re also re-visiting all areas of the club budgets and cash-flow projections as costs and overheads are not always static and it’s very important that we get this crucial area of the business plan right before we go to press with other things.”

This led to speculation among fans that despite the leagues public announcement of league wide agreement, Manchester were still considering their situation.

The early signing of Tony Hand as coach for 3 seasons stated an intention by Manchester management to retain one of the EIHL’s foremost talent both on the ice and in recruitment. This season Hand’s team, despite only finishing 6th in the league, cleaned up in the post season awards dinner, with David Alexandre Beauregard lifting the player of the season award among other phoenix accolades.

Forum speculation re-ignited amid comments from Vipers GM Jamie Longmuir at the Vipers Fans Forum last Friday. With Newcastle being among the original “3 teams” that were reportedly “excluded” from league discussions back in March, Jamie states that he “had spoken with Phoenix owner Neil Morris on a number of occasions in the last few weeks”, and agreed that “it is looking likely [Manchester] would make the move to the EPL”. Longmuir went on to mention that a decision has not been made regarding how fixtures would be structured were Manchester to leave the league, with 4 home games and 4 away games per team not being an options “overly favoured by clubs”. (For further look at Longmuir, Ferone and Wilsons comments, see our blow-by-blow report from Newcastle)

Confirmation of Manchesters future is expected on Thursday night when owners face a full house of Phoenix fans at the Britannia Hotel for a “planning unveiling” in which the team are ” keen to offer our supporters a public chance to have their questions answered”. Fans from across the country will look on for news of exactly where Manchester will compete next season, the choices made could have various repercussions to the EIHL and EPL alike.

UKHL is hoping to bring you instant reaction from the Britannia Hotel on Thursday night.

Vipers Fans Forum

The Off-Season is well under way. Fans of all teams are considering their season ticket options and keeping a close eye on their teams roster acquisitions.

With rumours still rife around the league of instability and rumours of an uncertain future at EIHL level for some teams, fans are on tenterhooks for news on their teams plans for the coming season.

On Thursday night, at the Newcastle/Gateshead Hilton Hotel, the Newcastle Vipers held a “Fans Forum” in which they presented their first 2 signings of the season, David Longstaff and Mark Gouett. They also provided a Q+A regarding their plans for the season ahead and the forthcoming “mid season move” from the Metro Radio Arena to the Whitley Bay Ice Rink.

UKHL brought you a live blow by blow account of this fans forum directly from the Hilton Hotel.

And UKHL also gained instant reaction following the forum from Vipers fans.

AGREEMENT REACHED!

Breaking news from EIHL towers: we’re going to have hockey next year and everyone can play! The clubs have reached agreement over a ten ITC slot league involving all of this year’s sides, with the exception of Basingstoke. The Knock Out Cup will be re-organised, possiby into another Weekend Finals tournament in the early season or disbanded altogether. Meanwhile, The Challenge Cup will also get a makeover with a one-off final at a neutral venue the reward for the teams who progress to that stage.

This is brilliant news for hockey folk around the league on this Playoff Monday, widely considered to be the most depressing day of the year. There is no mention of any wage cap in the new proposals, something that is sure to upset fans of the smaller budget clubs. However, surely the carrot on the stick of hockey at all should be the main focus of the moment!

Playoff Final 2009 – Final Score Steelers 2-0 Panthers

Playoff Sunday

[Update - 11.00am]I may still be a little drunk, but what a day it’s going to be! I hyped it yesterday and Friday, but this really could be the tastiest game in Elite League history. Can’t wait to get the coverage started! Last night was brilliant in the Bunkers with the Giants triumphing in an impromptu rock, scissor, paper, against a valiant Sheffield side. Rumours abound of the Nate Leslie Cup being up for grabs tonight.

Whatever happens, today is especially poignant for fans of the Panthers and Steelers after recent deaths in the hockey community, so whoever comes out on top, it’s going to mean a lot! Let’s hope for a great game of hockey!

[Update - 3.27am] Well folks, what a day!! I don’t know how I’m typing this post, but I’m alive and that’s what counts. The rest of the guys and gals have faded and I’m totally on my own…luckily I bought an extra sausage butty for just this time of day. I hope you all enjoyed the coverage earlier and that you all are a little more sober than us!

`G’nite!

Day one down.

Thanks for all your comments and tweets today, it’s appreciated. I’m not sure we’ll hear too much more out of the boys in Nottingham this evening, batteries were running low and alcohol levels starting to run high ;)

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for coverage of the Sheffield Steelers taking on the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite League Playoff Final.

Coventry Blaze v Nottingham Panthers – build up

Saturday: 4.20

Well guys and girls, thanks for following the text coverage from the first game. We’re still ironing out the kinks in the system, and my phone has been on the blink a lot too, but we’re getting round the obstacles. We really wish that we could have done this through official channels and brought you even more from the inside, but the Elite League couldn’t get back to us in time.

Anyway, an utterly fantastic first game between the Devils and Steelers ended with the Yorkshire men coming out on top. I think the Devils faded significantly in the third and their aggressive forechecking game lost its influence as time went on. Sheffield were calm and composed and look like team who will go all the way tomorrow. It’s very difficult to see any of the other semi-finalists finding the strength and stamina to compete tomorrow. At the same time, we’ve seen plenty of shocks before and you just never know!

The late face off will be an interesting game, but I have to be honest in saying that I don’t know a whole lot about either side. I expect it to be a physical encounter and that the Panthers’ fans will really make themselves heard in the cauldron of noise that is the NIC at Playoff Weekend.

Well, we’re having fun so far and we hope that the updates are helping you guys who are not here to enjoy the weekend too! Tune in in 35 mins!
